{"id":1894,"date":"2012-09-13T08:00:32","date_gmt":"2012-09-13T07:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/?p=1894"},"modified":"2025-02-11T11:51:18","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T11:51:18","slug":"should-you-show-your-labrador-puppy-who-is-boss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/should-you-show-your-labrador-puppy-who-is-boss\/","title":{"rendered":"Should you dominate your Labrador puppy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I read a post on a forum recently by someone that had been advised to dominate or pin down,\u00a0 their eleven week old Labrador puppy.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we forget that this kind of advice can still be found on the internet and TV.<\/p>\n<p>People used to think that dogs were highly motivated by status.<\/p>\n<p>We used to believe that adult dogs have a desire to be pack leaders.\u00a0 We now know that this is not generally the case.<\/p>\n<p>Where &#8216;dominance&#8217;\u00a0 type techniques work (and they do work sometimes) it is because they are acting as punishers.<\/p>\n<h2>Confusing dominance with punishment<\/h2>\n<p>Pinning a Labrador puppy down can certainly be very intimidating to him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pack-leader-your-puppy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1895\" title=\"pack-leader-your-puppy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pack-leader-your-puppy-252x300.jpg\" alt=\"Pack leader to your labrador puppy\" width=\"252\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pack-leader-your-puppy-252x300.jpg 252w, https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pack-leader-your-puppy-768x913.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pack-leader-your-puppy-696x827.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pack-leader-your-puppy-353x420.jpg 353w, https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pack-leader-your-puppy.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a>And can therefore act as a punishment for the immediately preceding behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>It will also temporarily (at first) reduce the puppy&#8217;s feeling of security in your presence and his trust in your good intentions.<\/p>\n<p>As a result the puppy may well be subdued for a while afterwards.\u00a0 But will his behaviour have improved in the long term?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is probably no.<\/p>\n<p>Punishment can reduce the likelihood of behaviour being repeated but in order for the puppy to learn from punishment,\u00a0he needs to be able to link it directly with the &#8216;bad deed&#8217;.\u00a0\u00a0This can be hard to do.<\/p>\n<h2>First catch your puppy!<\/h2>\n<p>Unless you punish your puppy immediately, \u00a0punishment is not an effective behaviour modification technique.<\/p>\n<p>Punishing a lively,\u00a0 excitable puppy in a timely and effective manner, in a way that he can learn from,\u00a0 is not easy.<\/p>\n<h2>Side effects<\/h2>\n<p>Punishment also has a number of unfortunate side effects.<\/p>\n<p>Including a build up of resistance to punishment which is common in many dogs.<\/p>\n<p>In other words,\u00a0 the dog gets tougher, and the punishments have to get tougher too.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a happy road to go down.<\/p>\n<p>In more sensitive dogs, over use of corrections can result in the dog losing confidence in his owner, and being reluctant to approach him and slow to respond to commands.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand,\u00a0 there are NO side effects to reward based training.<\/p>\n<h2>Coping with puppy behaviour<\/h2>\n<p>Small puppies can be difficult.\u00a0 They are fast moving, have sharp teeth and the attention span of a gnat.\u00a0 But there are ways to make your life easier.<\/p>\n<p>Two to four month old Labrador pups are the equivalent of human toddlers.\u00a0\u00a0 They have no sense of danger,\u00a0 no understanding of &#8216;property&#8217; and no moral code.<\/p>\n<p>So if &#8216;dominance&#8217;\u00a0 doesn&#8217;t help,\u00a0 what can you do?<\/p>\n<p>Here are three tips to peaceful living arrangements with a canine toddler.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Puppy proof your home<\/li>\n<li>Restrict access<\/li>\n<li>Train in little steps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Puppy proof your home<\/h2>\n<p>Canine &#8216;toddlers&#8217;\u00a0 just like human toddlers need to be denied access to things which get them into constant conflict with their human parents.\u00a0 Otherwise life becomes one long battle.<\/p>\n<p>It can be very helpful to cast a discerning eye around your home and ask yourself if there is anything your canine toddler can reach that you do not want him to have.\u00a0 Then move it out of his way. \u00a0 This may seem obvious, \u00a0but it is something we can easily forget in the excitement of the new pup&#8217;s arrival<\/p>\n<h2>Restrict the puppy&#8217;s access<\/h2>\n<p>So many people let a small puppy rampage around their entire home.\u00a0 There is no need to do this.\u00a0 It is absolutely fine to baby gate your kitchen or part of your downstairs in order to deny access to the living room\/dining room etc, until your puppy is older.<\/p>\n<p>This gives you a room where you can relax and enjoy a book or the TV without constantly watching a puppy<\/p>\n<h2>Train in little bursts using treats and toys<\/h2>\n<p>Try to teach your puppy that you are the source of all that is wonderful.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/bubble-theory-dog-training\/\">Training creates a bond between you and your dog<\/a> and helps him focus on you and on what you want him to do.<\/p>\n<p>Teach him some basic obedience skills using generous rewards.\u00a0 Encourage him to seek out your company.\u00a0 A really reliable recall is one of the most important things you will every teach your dog and it is never to early to begin.\u00a0 Even with tiny puppies you can make a start.\u00a0 Simply use a recall signal every time he rushes towards you and then give him something lovely to eat or a game, or a cuddle if he is still into that. \u00a0 Visit our <a title=\"recall centre\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/?page_id=851\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recall centre<\/a> for more information<\/p>\n<h2>Domination is not necessary<\/h2>\n<p>Pinning a puppy down will not turn you into a &#8216;pack leader&#8217;
