Some dogs even eat the same thing for every meal.<\/p>\n<p>And frequently their food even <em>looks<\/em> perfectly homogenous.<\/p>\n<p>As a person, it\u2019s hard to imagine a mono-diet of identical kibbles at every meal for the rest of time, and not picture yourself losing interest.<\/p>\n<p>Dog\u2019s emotional connection with food is not as well studied as humans\u2019. We know that human appetite is influenced by things like palatability and variety.<\/p>\n<p>But we also occupy a lucky position where we can afford to spend more time worrying about <em>what<\/em> we\u2019re going to eat, than how we\u2019re going to find it.<\/p>\n<p>Some dog owners are convinced that their dogs get bored of eating the same meal for too long.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"toys\"><\/a>At the time of writing, we don\u2019t know if they\u2019re right, or if dogs\u2019 residual wild instinct to eat what they can get, when they can, makes food boredom a non-issue.<\/p>\n<h2>Do Dogs Get Bored Of Their Toys?<\/h2>\n<p>Does your dog have a basket full of toys they don\u2019t touch anymore?<\/p>\n<p>Whether dogs get bored of their toys, and how much they value novelty is hard to gauge.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of experienced dog owners certainly recommend keeping a puppy\u2019s toy stash out of reach. Bbringing out a couple of different toys at a time in rotation, to keep them \u2018fresh\u2019 and appealing.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"home\"><\/a>As far as we\u2019re aware, there isn\u2019t any scientific evidence to back this up or refute it, but we\u2019d love to hear what you think in the comments box when you reach the bottom of this article!<\/p>\n<h2>Do Dogs Get Bored At Home?<\/h2>\n<p>Increasing numbers of pet parents need to juggle dog ownership with obligations outside the home.<\/p>\n<p>For their dogs, that can mean regular periods at home alone. How do they feel about it?<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty of evidence that isolation and lack of access to social interactions can cause problems.<\/p>\n<p>Things like distress, anxiety and boredom in dogs, which can manifest as destructive or abnormal behavior, or even physical symptoms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1090023311004242\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">such as changes in appetite<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dogs are likely to find being alone boring and upsetting because the entire history of domestication was based upon creating dogs who wanted to be near us.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"walks\"><\/a>Removing ourselves again has rather pulled the rug from under their feet in this respect.<\/p>\n<h2>Do Dogs Get Bored Of The Same Walk?<\/h2>\n<p>So dogs can definitely get bored and even distressed by being left alone for long periods.<\/p>\n<p>But what about by carrying out the same activities every day, like walking the same route?<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re getting back into philosophical territory here, and there\u2019s no proven answer either way.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s interesting evidence that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.2752\/089279315X14129350721975\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> we tend to project our own feelings onto dogs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"signs\"><\/a>So if we\u2019re in a slump and feeling jaded with an over familiar walking route, we\u2019re more likely to interpret our dog\u2019s behavior as being bored too.<\/p>\n<h2>How To Tell If Your Dog Is Bored<\/h2>\n<p>All in all, with the notable exception of being left home alone for too long, there\u2019s nothing much in the way of evidence about what things make dogs bored.<\/p>\n<p>But vets and behaviorists agree dogs can get bored. So just like for humans, the places they find boredom in their lives are likely to depend on the individual.<\/p>\n<p>So a more reliable way to tell if your dog is bored is to watch their behavior for clues.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tell tale signs that a dog is bored.<\/p>\n<h4>Disinterest<\/h4>\n<p>This most applies to things like toys and training treats.<\/p>\n<p>If your pup simply stops playing with a new toy after a few weeks, or stops being motivated by their usual training treats, it could be that the novelty has worn off and their appeal is a bit tarnished now.<\/p>\n<h4>Destructive Behavior<\/h4>\n<p>Bored dogs can be very proactive about finding something to keep themselves busy.<\/p>\n<p>Chewing furniture and digging are classic ways of passing the time if you\u2019re a dog at a loose end.<\/p>\n<h4>Abnormal Behavior<\/h4>\n<p>Performing abnormal compulsive or repetitive behaviors, like tail chasing, licking or self grooming can be signs that a dog is bored.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that these can all be parts of normal behavior as well, but the problem arises when a dog starts performing them in an unhealthy way.<\/p>\n<p>I can be hard to tell when a benign behavior has turned into a manifestation of stress or boredom.<\/p>\n<p>A study in 2011 found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3212522\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">owners were more likely to interpret tail chasing as cute, funny, playing a harmless game or as a party trick, than as a sign of boredom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Other Behaviors<\/h4>\n<p>Other behaviors of bored dogs include<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>barking<\/li>\n<li>eating their poop<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Getting A Second Opinion<\/h4>\n<p>Canine behavior is complex. Lots of things dogs do can be borne out of boredom, or something else.<\/p>\n<p>For example, it\u2019s natural for terriers bred to flush out vermin to want to spend a lot of time digging.<\/p>\n<p>Excessive licking could be due to nervousness, or skin irritation.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"solutions\"><\/a>If your dog is behaving in a way which is odd, or unusual for them, as a vet to rule out any underlying medical causes, and consult a behaviorist if you can.<\/p>\n<h2>How To Stop Your Dog Feeling Bored<\/h2>\n<p>The key ingredients to staving off doggy boredom are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>physical exercise<\/li>\n<li>mental stimulation<\/li>\n<li>social interaction<\/li>\n<li>and opportunities to perform natural doggy behaviors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"top-ten\"><\/a>In the final section, we present our eight favorite ideas for meeting these needs, so your dog is never bored again!<\/p>\n<h2>Our Top 8 Boredom Beating Ideas For Dogs<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Take up dog sports.<\/strong> Activities like agility, flyball and canicross are great ways to work your dog\u2019s body and brain in one go.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Try scent games.<\/strong> Scent games really challenge your dog to concentrate and process the information they receive through their mighty noses. Many owners report that scent games are both tiring and calming for dogs of all breeds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use puzzle feeders.<\/strong> Dogs\u2019 wild ancestors spent most of their waking hours preoccupied by finding food.
