These colors also come in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/shades-of-yellow-labrador\/\">few different shades<\/a>. Some, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/fox-red-labrador\/\">red fox Lab<\/a>, are achieved through selective breeding of those shades. Others through genetic differences like the controversial dilute gene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dilute genes make the typical Labrador Retriever colors paler, giving you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/charcoal-lab\/\">charcoal<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/silver-labradors\/\">silver<\/a> and champagne Labs. You can also find Labs with mismarks, for example, you might find a splash of white on the chest, paws or toes of otherwise solidly colored dogs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"#photos\">Pictures of the different Labrador colors<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#origins\">Labrador Retriever colors through history<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#genes\">Coat color genetics<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#litters\">Predicting colors in a litter of puppies<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#rare\">Rare Labrador colors<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Today I&#8217;ll look at where the different colors come from, and what they mean for your dog&#8217;s personality, health, lifespan and temperament. I am going share pictures of all the different Labrador Retriever colors, and some I have some fun illustrations that help clear up the mystery of what happens when we mix the different colors together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Playful Labrador Puppies | Cute Compilation!!\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yjD4wZJKuaM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"many\">How Many Labrador Retriever Colors Are There?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Strictly speaking, there are only three different Labrador colors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/black-labrador\/\">black<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/chocolate-labrador\/\">brown<\/a> (more usually called chocolate or liver)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/yellow-labrador\/\">yellow<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the three colors recognised and accepted by the AKC in the United States, and the Kennel Club in the United Kingdom. Personally I&#8217;m not a Lab color purist, but many Lab fans feel these should be the only registered colors in the breed. In practice, there are other colors available and there is a wide range of <em>shades<\/em> of yellow Labrador color, from palest cream to richest fox red. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Know Your Lab Colors!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m going to explain the genetic code that controls Labrador color inheritance. And I&#8217;ll answer your questions about what puppy colors to expect when Labradors mate. My aim is to try to keep it as simple as I can! Understanding how a Labrador&#8217;s coat color is inherited starts with understanding how the three basic colors are passed on from one generation to the next. <a name=\"black-chocolate-Labrador-origins\"><\/a>So I will tackle that first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"origins\">Original Labrador Retriever Color<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Black is the original, archetypal Labrador color, and genetically the most dominant. In fact, from the breed\u2019s inception in the early 19th century until the turn of the 20th century, it was the only acceptable color. Chocolate and yellow puppies were frequently euthanized at birth. So how come they didn\u2019t die out altogether? <a name=\"black-chocolate-Labrador-origins\"><\/a>To understand that we have to look at the genetic difference between black and chocolate Labs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/color.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"genes\">Labrador Retriever Color Genetics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Both types get their color from a pigment called eumelanin. Labs with lots of eumelanin pigment in their coat are black. If they have a little less, they appear brown instead. The genetic instruction for being black or brown is held at the B locus in a dog\u2019s DNA. So what is a B locus?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLocus\u201d is just a fancy term for a specific location on a chromosome, that&#8217;s where we store the genetic code in every cell in our bodies. We use letters to tell each location apart &#8211; a bit like giving each locus its own zip code! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The B locus is home to a pair of genes called B genes. One of the pair comes from your Lab\u2019s mom, and the other from their dad. There are two types of B gene your Lab can get in their pair:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One we call big <em>B<\/em> &#8211; it contains an instruction to make lots of eumelanin, and causes a black Labrador coat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And one we call little <em>b<\/em> &#8211; it contains an instruction for less eumelanin, and causes a brown or chocolate coat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"black-Labrador-dominance\"><\/a>Big <em>B<\/em> is a dominant gene, and little <em>b<\/em> is a recessive gene. Which leads us to&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Black is a Dominant Lab Color<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The three different combinations of B genes that a Labrador can inherit from his parents are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>BB<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Bb<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and <em>bb.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Dominant genes override, recessive genes. I like to think of them as a switch that turn off the recessive gene they are paired with. So dog with <em>BB<\/em> genes will be black, because he has two genes for a black coat. And a <em>Bb<\/em> dog will be black too, because the dominant <em>B<\/em> gene switches off the recessive <em>b<\/em> gene.&nbsp;<a name=\"chocolate-Labrador-inheritance\"><\/a> Only a dog with a matching pair of <em>bb<\/em> genes will express the instruction for less eumelanin in their coat, and be brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"litters\">How Chocolate Labradors Are Made<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a handy table to help you picture that relationship between B gene combinations, and Lab coat color. But the dominance of the black color enabled our chocolate friends to remain hidden and rare with the breed, for many decades. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generation after generation of black dogs can continue to have only black puppies if dogs with the Bb gene are only ever mated to dogs with BB genes. In fact, it would take two black Labs both carrying the little <em>b<\/em> gene to produce chocolate puppies. But like tossing a coin and getting heads several times in a row, it\u2019s also possible for a Lab with <em>Bb<\/em> genes to pass the <em>B<\/em> version to every puppy in a litter, and only throw black puppies. <a name=\"yellow-Labrador-inheritance\"><\/a>And of course, some Labradors are neither black nor brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Do Yellow Labradors Come From?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are times when a <em>BB<\/em> or a <em>Bb<\/em> dog is not black at all. And when a <em>bb<\/em> dog isn\u2019t brown!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The genetic information that creates a yellow coat comes from another pair of genes altogether. These genes are located at the E locus. And &#8211; you guessed it &#8211; we call them E genes. Just like B genes there are two versions of the E gene, big <em>E<\/em> and little <em>e<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Big <em>E<\/em> is the dominant gene. It does not interfere with the B genes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Little <em>e<\/em> is the recessive gene. It has the potential to mask the B genes that would otherwise give us black or brown coats. And the result is a yellow dog.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Yellow Overrides Black and Chocolate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Only the little <em>e<\/em> gene can mask the instructions for black or chocolate fur. But little <em>e<\/em> is recessive, and remember that &#8216;switch&#8217; effect? If the dominant gene big <em>E<\/em> gene is present, the little <em>e<\/em> gene won\u2019t work. There are three possible combinations of E gene that a dog can inherit. It could have<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>two dominant genes (<em>EE<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>two masking genes (<em>ee<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or one of each (<em>Ee<\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Only the middle of these three dogs will be yellow. In the first and third dog, the <em>E<\/em> gene will switch off the <em>e<\/em> gene, and the dog&#8217;s color will be determined by its B genes.&nbsp;<a name=\"nine-Labrador-types\"><\/a> Now let\u2019s put all that information about B and E genes together!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nine Different Possible Labrador Genotypes!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every Labrador has a combination of B and E genes &#8211; called their genotype. There are nine different possible genotypes. Here they are in full:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"372\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-4.jpg\" alt=\"labrador colors\" class=\"wp-image-25766\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-4.jpg 372w, https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-4-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-4-336x420.jpg 336w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><a name=\"Labrador-puppy-color-predictions\"><\/a>Can you see why each combination of genes turns out the way it does?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Predicting Labrador Retriever Colors in Puppies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Trying to work out what colors Labrador puppies will be is difficult without knowing the parents\u2019 genotypes. All their offspring will be yellow. <a name=\"chocolate-crossed-chocolate\"><\/a>This is because yellow dogs do not possess the big <em>E<\/em> gene which is needed to switch off the masking effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mating Two Chocolate Labradors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Two brown Labs mated together will never throw black puppies because brown dogs do not have the big <em>B<\/em> gene. But two chocolate Labs can produce yellow puppies, if each of the parents carries the little <em>e<\/em> gene &#8211; like this:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"674\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-5.jpg\" alt=\"mating two chocolate labs\" class=\"wp-image-25767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-5.jpg 674w, https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-5-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-5-324x160.jpg 324w, https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-5-533x261.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In the mixed litter, statistically one of half of the puppies will be chocolate and one half yellow. But just like tossing a coin, we know that the rules of probability aren\u2019t the same as guarantees! That\u2019s even more true when we start looking at other color combinations of parents. <a name=\"black-crossed-black\"><\/a>Let&#8217;s look at a few more examples<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Two Black Labradors have Yellow or Chocolate Puppies?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on their genotype, two black Labradors can indeed have yellow or chocolate puppies. Remember from our grid above that there are four different possible genotypes for a black Labrador. The genotype refers to the genetic code that the dog carries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Four Ways to be Black<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the diagram below, I&#8217;ve put the four possible genotypes along the top to represent one parent &#8211; the mother for example. And the four different possible black genotypes down the side to represent the father. Inside the grid are the puppies that could be born from each combination.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"666\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-6.jpg\" alt=\"labrador colors\" class=\"wp-image-25768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-6.jpg 666w, https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-6-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>If and only if, both parents carry a little <em>e<\/em> gene, then some of the puppies may be yellow. Remember that your puppy needs two little <em>e<\/em> genes (one from each parent) in order to be yellow. If only one of two black dogs carries the little <em>e<\/em> gene, all their puppies will be black. But half will carry the yellow gene, and this is how the color can skip a generation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is It Possible to Get All Three Colors from Two Black Dogs?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes it is, check out the bottom right hand square in the diagram above! Notice that it can only happen if both parents dogs have this genotype: <em>EeBb<\/em>. <a name=\"yellow-crossed-chocolate\"><\/a>In other words, they both carry a little <em>e<\/em> and a little <em>b<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mating a Yellow Labrador with a Chocolate Labrador<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let&#8217;s look at what color the pups will be if you mate a chocolate Lab with a yellow Lab. This is good example of how complicated, and unexpected, Labrador colors can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are six different possibilities for litter color combinations depending on the genotype of the parents. You can even get a litter of all black puppies from a chocolate mother and a yellow father (or vice versa)! Here are the color possibilities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>yellow, black, and chocolate puppies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>yellow and black puppies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>black and chocolate puppies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>yellow and chocolate puppies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>all puppies are chocolate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>all puppies are black<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s have a closer look and find out why. That&#8217;s nice and simple. A yellow dog can be one of three different genotypes: <em>eeBB<\/em>, <em>eebb<\/em>, or <em>eeBb<\/em> &#8211; because every time two little <em>e<\/em> genes come together, they overwrite any combination of B genes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if a chocolate Lab with the genotype <em>Eebb<\/em> mates with a yellow Lab of the genotype <em>eeBb<\/em>, all the building blocks are there for puppies of every color. <a name=\"black-crossed-chocolate\"><\/a>But if we mate <em>EEbb<\/em> with <em>eeBB<\/em> all the puppies will be black, because they will all have one big <em>B<\/em> and one big <em>E<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about Dudleys?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes when you mate a yellow lab with a chocolate lab, you&#8217;ll get some yellow Labrador pups that lack the black nose pigmentation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This happens when the yellow Lab parent also carries the chocolate Lab gene. We&#8217;ve seen that there are four different ways to be black, but that chocolate dogs only come in two different genotypes. That gives us 8 potential outcomes. The chart below has the different black Labrador genotypes along the top, and the chocolate genotypes down the side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, we&#8217;ll look at the last possible combination of standard Labrador colors. <a name=\"black-crossed-yellow\"><\/a>Black crossed with yellow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Black Labs Crossed with Yellow Labradors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because there are four ways to be black and three ways to be yellow, there are quite a variety of color pups for a mating between a black Labrador and a yellow Labrador.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-9.jpg\" alt=\"mating a black and yellow lab\" class=\"wp-image-25771\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-9.jpg 668w, https:\/\/www.thelabradorsite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Lab-Colors-Table-9-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Of course, knowing what to expect depends upon knowing your sire and dams\u2019 genotypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some breeders might be able to hazard an educated guess based on observing several generations of litters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we\u2019ve also seen how genes can remain concealed within a family tree for decades &#8211; so surprises are always possible!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"silver-Labradors\"><\/a>And one of the biggest surprises of all for many breeders, is the silver Lab!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rare\">Silver Labradors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Last but not least, you may be wanting to know how silver Labradors get their coat color?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Silver is not among the traditionally recognised Labrador colors. That\u2019s because of the nine possible E and B gene combinations, only two produce a chocolate coat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in the real world, Lab breeders have a degree of control over the color of puppies they produce, and they will be influenced by demand from dog owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the frequency of each color in the Labrador population varies by region, and over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the UK, black Labs are most closely associated with gundog work. But in the US, chocolate Labs have long been in demand as hunting dogs too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And over time, more and more Labs have been reared purely for companionship.
