Fetch is a game that any dog can play. Although some dogs were bred to retrieve, any breed can benefit from playing fetch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you teach a dog to fetch you don’t just create a fun game for you both to enjoy, but a brilliant way to exercise them without you having to share all the legwork.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two broad approaches to getting a dog retrieving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Develop your dog’s natural instinct to retrieve<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Teach your dog a trained retrieve from the ground up<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The first method requires that the dog has some natural interest in retrieving. The second can be taught to any dog using an event marker such as a clicker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The clicker retrieve has revolutionized the way we teach dogs to fetch. You don’t need force, just encouragement and positive associations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This article focuses on the first method which works well for many Labradors. I’ll give you a link to the second at the end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Getting Your Dog To Play Ball<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Even dogs that have plenty of retrieving instinct can sometimes be challenging to get started with playing fetch the natural way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There are several potential reasons your dog doesn’t want to play fetch, or return with the ball or stick once you’ve thrown it. Today I’ll help you work out where the game is falling short, and share how to teach your dog to retrieve happily and enthusiastically, returning the ball to your hand ready for another round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
